Americans are no strangers to chronic back pain — 80% of the population experiences lower back pain at some point in their lives, and about one in five struggle with the pain on an ongoing basis. As the medical world scrambles to provide relief, usually through pain management or interventional techniques, there’s new hope on the horizon in the form of regenerative medicine. Rather than turning to solutions that only mask the problem, or potentially create larger ones, we believe in an approach that addresses the underlying cause of your back pain for long-term and sustainable results.
At Peak Physical Medicine, Dr. Ruben Garcia and our team are functional medicine specialists, which means we’re focused on providing solutions that afford you a better quality of life. Through our wide range of holistic and integrative services, we tackle everything from musculoskeletal pain to headaches, treating our patients in Visalia, California, from head to toe.
As part of our treatment protocols, we offer regenerative medicine in the form of stem cell and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapies, which are helping our patients repair and rebuild damaged tissues on a cellular level.

Before we explore the exciting world of regenerative medicine, let’s take a quick look at the main culprits behind back pain. In many cases, chronic back pain develops on the heels of degenerative forces that come with age and wear-and-tear. Leading the charge in this regard are a number of conditions, including:
Unfortunately, there are generally no quick fixes for these conditions, and many tend to get progressively worse, which is why we take a regenerative approach to degenerative conditions.
When we talk about regenerative medicine, there are two main therapies, including stem cell therapy and PRP therapy.
Stem cells are extraordinary cells that have the ability to transform into other cells and then multiply as that cell. In fact, these cells are the building blocks upon which most of your other cells are formed, and they’re most powerful during embryonic development as they create a human body. It’s for this reason that we use amniotic allografts as our source of stem cells.
When we inject these stem cells into your damaged tissue, they jump into action to reduce the swelling and then begin repairing and rebuilding your tissue. By providing your damaged area with these powerful resources, we can address your back pain at its source.
Your platelets are incredibly valuable cells as they’re responsible for clotting your blood, keeping you from bleeding out. But these little marvels also contain powerful growth factors and other specific proteins that create the ultimate healing environment. When these growth factors are released, they amplify the call for healing, which accelerates the repairs.
We use your own platelets, which we separate out in a special centrifuge to create a concentrate that’s 5-10 times higher than normal. We then inject the PRP directly into the damaged tissues in your back.
Both stem cell and PRP therapies require some patience on your part as they rebuild on a cellular level, but your patience is rewarded as you gradually regain pain-free movement in your back.
